Frequently Asked Questions

Have A Question?

  • As condensation builds up on the evaporator core behind the dashboard, it creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Cabin air filter replacement or system sanitization can often fix this problem!

It’s important to us that our customers know exactly what we’re going to do with their vehicle. Here’s what you can expect from Walnut Creek Brake and Tire when you bring your vehicle in for an Brake Performance Check.

Brake
Performance Check

Technicians measure center vent temperatures and inspect the serpentine belt, AC compressor, condenser, and visible hoses for obvious physical damage or cracks.

Temperature Inspection

We hook up specialized pressure gauges to the high and low-pressure service ports to check if the system is operating within factory specifications.

Pressure System Testing

Because refrigerant is a sealed gas, low freon means there is a leak. We use electronic "sniffers" or inject a UV dye into the system to locate tiny pinholes in the lines, O-rings, or the condenser.

Electronic Leak Detection

If the system requires a recharge, we safely evacuate the old refrigerant using a recovery machine, pull a deep vacuum to clear out moisture, and refill the system to the exact weight required by the vehicle's manufacturer.

Evacuation & Recharge

Types of Freon & Why It’s Important

Vehicles use different types of freon depending on their year of manufacture. Our certified technicians have the specialized recovery and recharge machines required to service both older R-134a systems and modern R-1234yf systems.

  • R-134a: Found in most vehicles built before 2015–2021

  • R-1234yf: The newer, environmentally friendly standard required in almost all modern vehicles (built after 2015–2021)

A Warning About DIY Recharge Kits

We are often asked: “Can’t I just use a retail store AC recharge can”?

Over-the-counter recharge kits don't fix the underlying leak. More importantly, they frequently overcharge the system or introduce air and moisture, which mixes with refrigerant to create a corrosive acid that destroys the expensive AC compressor.
