Repair & Recharge

In Walnut Creek, CA

Summers in the East Bay and commutes over the Caldecott Tunnel can put immense strain on your vehicle's cooling system. Don't sweat the East Bay heat. From minor freon leaks to complex compressor failures, we diagnose and fix why your car's air conditioning isn't cooling.

Automotive AC:

Frequently Asked Questions

  • This is typically caused by a refrigerant leak, a failing compressor clutch, or a blocked expansion valve.

  • As condensation builds up on the evaporator core behind the dashboard, it creates a breeding ground for mold and mildew. Cabin air filter replacement or system sanitization can often fix this problem!

  • A squeal usually points to a slipping serpentine belt, while a loud clicking or rattling indicates a failing AC compressor.

  • Tiny leaks in your AC lines can allow moisture from the outside air into the system. That moisture mixes with the refrigerant and literally freezes inside the expansion valve or evaporator core and blocks the flow of cold air.

Our Fix: We’ll perform an AC evacuation to pull out the moisture, fix the structural leak, and recharge it with pure, dry freon.

  • Weak airflow is usually an air-delivery problem, not a freon problem. The most common culprit is a severely clogged cabin air filter. Other causes include a failing blower motor or a loose ventilation hose behind the dashboard.

Changing a cabin air filter is a quick, inexpensive fix that we check during every standard AC diagnostic. If it’s an electrical or mechanical issue with the blower motor, our team can swap it out to restore full velocity.

  • It is normal! Your car’s AC system acts as a dehumidifier, pulling moisture out of the air inside the cabin. That moisture condenses on the evaporator core and safely drains out of a small tube onto the ground under your engine bay.

If you notice water pooling inside your passenger floor mats instead of on the pavement outside, that drain tube is clogged with debris. We can quickly clear that drain line to protect your interior from mold.

Performance Check

It’s important to us that our customers know exactly what we’re going to do with their vehicle.  Here’s what you can expect from Walnut Creek Brake and Tire when you bring your vehicle in for an AC Performance Check.

Pressure System Testing

We hook up specialized pressure gauges to the high and low-pressure service ports to check if the system is operating within factory specifications.

Electronic Leak Detection

Because refrigerant is a sealed gas, low freon means there is a leak. We use electronic "sniffers" or inject a UV dye into the system to locate tiny pinholes in the lines, O-rings, or the condenser.

Evacuation & Recharge

If the system requires a recharge, we safely evacuate the old refrigerant using a recovery machine, pull a deep vacuum to clear out moisture, and refill the system to the exact weight required by the vehicle's manufacturer.

Types of Freon & Why It’s Important

Vehicles use different types of freon depending on their year of manufacture. Our certified technicians have the specialized recovery and recharge machines required to service both older R-134a systems and modern R-1234yf systems.

  • R-134a: Found in most vehicles built before 2015–2021

  • R-1234yf: The newer, environmentally friendly standard required in almost all modern vehicles (built after 2015–2021)

A Warning About DIY Recharge Kits

We are often asked: “Can’t I just use a retail store AC recharge can”?

Over-the-counter recharge kits don't fix the underlying leak. More importantly, they frequently overcharge the system or introduce air and moisture, which mixes with refrigerant to create a corrosive acid that destroys the expensive AC compressor.

Temperature Inspection

Technicians measure center vent temperatures and inspect the serpentine belt, AC compressor, condenser, and visible hoses for obvious physical damage or cracks.
